Society in general is openly hostile toward fatness and adores thinness. People who have never been thin don’t even consider that skinny people could feel insecure about their weight. It’s either said through jealousy or it’s said because people are worried you will lose more weight and become underweight. I wouldn’t let it bother you. Majority of women don’t want to be fat, so telling women to lose weight is much more insulting than telling them to gain some weight.
Because a skinny person being ashamed of their skinniness is, to some people, much less obvious than a fat person being ashamed of their fatness. So their impression is it’s “stop eating burgers, fatso, go for a run lazy ass” vs “aw you don’t eat enough, that’s okay you don’t have to be that skinny, go ahead and eat more ” That being said these days it’s for sure considered rude to tell fat people to lose weight, to their face at least. I’m not ashamed, but I can’t do anything about how I look. Regardless how much I eat or exercise I could never gain weight. I’m just naturally skinny. Yeah perhaps if I started a burgers and beer diet I would get some weight, but at what cost! Eating normally just doesn’t do it for me.

There are numerous health benefits to a good BMI, more people will find you attractive, and even sex gets better when you’re less fat and more healthy. Losing weight SHOULD be seen as an opportunity to get access to all these benefits, but it can often be seen as an attack on the person’s overall value. This is especially true if the person has tried to lose weight in the past and failed. That can cause the person to feel that they are doomed to be a loser and you’re reminding them of their failures and doom.
Basically, we’re trying not to hurt people’s feelings and trigger their insecurities.
