Wasn’t born rich. My cousin’s nephew’s dog’s owner’s uncle’s cousin had no children and no school debt and still ended up being poor in his 80s, and he wasn’t born rich. It’s as almost as if anedoctal examples don’t matter, and that spending habits matter more than whether or not you have children. But also…nobody is saying that? The only comments I’ve seen talking about “who’s gonna take care of you” are like yours, preemptively countering it. Maybe there’s a bunch way down at the bottom of the thread or something? As a parent, let me say: if the reason you want kids is to provide elder care for yourself…throw a condom on there, champ. Make with the snip-snip. It was a higher ranked comment when I originally commented. And as a parent of three, totally agree, them taking care of me at the end isn’t even a personal consideration for having kids. For me, taking care is not physical care. It is also just caring, calling sometimes, making you part of their life… Okay, but who’s going to set your hyperclock or make sure the holocorder’s set to beam Law & Order: Andromeda to your brain in the years before you get to a live-in facility in your elderly years? Who’s gonna move your hovercouch?

I think it’s so odd that any time the Witches’ brew 6,66% abv shirt Additionally,I will love this kids v. no kids discussion comes up that it’s assumed that people without kids are going to end up wealthy as a result. It’s indisputable that people without kids would have more disposable income than people with kids, but not everyone who doesn’t have kids is making six figures. Working class people and people living in poverty can be childless, too. I have kids and I agree that counting on them being there for you when you’re older is a bad reason to have them and an unfair burden to place on them. But this whole “flush with cash because no kids thing” is probably a myth. Kids are expensive, but they don’t determine whether or not you’re able to build wealth. We would need some stats on this, but there’s a case to be made that the opposite is true for many people. In my case, when my second was on its way, we knew we needed a house so we scraped together every penny we could get our hands on and bought a house (on a single income). We struggled for a few years after but now have 200k+ in equity in the house. If we didn’t have kids, we would probably have put off buying, maybe moved around a bit and as prices climbed we may have eventually found ourselves priced out. Also, because kids are expensive, and because we chose to go the single income route until they were in school, that was motivation for me to take better and better jobs over the years. Had I not had kids, it’s possible I would’ve felt content at a lower income level and just used my free time to travel or whatever else. Having kids forced me to grow up and be responsible, save, invest, etc. of course you can do this without kids, but with them, there was no choice.
