I’ve been travelling 14 months, those days are very necessary. There’s days I don’t even leave my room nevermind leave my hostel. Food delivered, Netflix, recharge.. take them when you need them and don’t feel guilty because if you push yourself to keep going every day you will probably burnout but things will definitely be less interesting or impressive to you which is a pity. Yes! A friend of mine calls it a “duvet day,” which I love. I’m far more active when I travel than when I’m at home, and need those resets to stay on track. I definitely need days off, I book a nice hotel, read and Netflix. Only go out to eat and maybe date. My rule of thumb: 1 day a week or 4 days a month. Because of my job I’m really apprehensive about day trips since I need to clock in at 4-5pm so I can only do them on the weekends that’s why I spend a full week at every place I go and then travel either on Saturday or Sunday. I only did it every few weeks, but yeah, a night in a decent hotel (usually in a layover sort of city) with my own quiet space, maybe a pool, get some room service… totally helped refresh me and kept me going. Oh man, when I rest in hotels it’s just another experience. I love the artificiality of them, everything is made so you are comfortable. There are times when I actually crave those shitty Club Sandwiches or Burgers from the room service.

I loved Bratislava exactly because of that. Pretty small, calm, easygoing, no pressure or stress to continue travelling. Never. My time off work is too valuable to spend it doing nothing. If I were travelling for like three months I would maybe have one or two but I don’t feel it’s necessary for trips less than a month. Alternating works well for me. E.g. taking a day trip by train/car to explore a thing I heard about, and something more local the next day (cafe/pub/museum/park). I’ve only needed straight up “zero” days if I crammed too much on a previous one You’re working and traveling. You shouldn’t have to work and travel every single day. Zero days on a short trip is one thing but if you’re nonstop traveling I would think you’d need them (if you’ve seen what you want to) Down days are absolutely necessary to relax and reset. If you were pushing yourself to hit all the tourist destinations and experiences every day, the experiences would start to blur together, not be as memorable, and exhausting to the point that you would need a vacation from your vacation! Traveling doesn’t make sense of you barely remember doing it and too tired to enjoy it.

I like to plan down time or a down day at a place with nice amenities such as a beach, pool, sauna or nearby massage spa. Even just watching movies at ‘home’ and eating some comfort food will reset my battery. I love traveling and taking long trips but I definitely need the downtime.
It’s absolutely fine! Years ago, I did a solo trip to China and felt exhausted and a bit intimidated my first day. Yup, to make it feel a bit different from home I like to go to nearby restaurants to order takeout, or to the Winners 2024 American League Wildcard Shirt Furthermore, I will do this grocery to stock up on snacks or meals. Love doing this and ordering food in through a local delivery service. Still feels like I’m getting a local experience/cuisine while also getting to just chillllll I love Bratislava (it’s one of my favorite European cities I’ve been to) because it is calm and beautiful, but it is small and a great place to just chill out. Don’t feel bad needing a day, two, or even a week to not do much. The more and longer I travel, the more I savor those down days! Sometimes sitting around a hotel (or wherever) can be very refreshing. Unless I’m on a very short trip where I’m going to miss out on things I’ll never have another chance to see I never feel bad about taking some time to do absolutely nothing. I once lost a day of a vacation because of travel disruptions and decided to hole up in an airport hotel watching Netflix and eating overpriced room service and it ended up being a fantastic day.
