To be clear, I try to be conscious about where I’m spending my money. 98% of my closet comes from “sustainable” and “ethical” brands. But STILL I’m finding that clothing is not lasting. Most of these clothes are priced well above $100 but I’m still finding loose threads, poor craftsmanship and bad materials. For instance, I have a white tank from the Line by K that retails for $75 and it is completely stretched out. I’ve worn it around ten times and followed all the wash instructions but it’s so stretched that one of my boobs falls out of it. My reformation pants have so many loose threads. Aritzia is super hit or miss. Moving forward instead of just feeding into a brand’s ethos, I’m going through the material composition with a fine tooth comb. What are the brands that are reasonably priced but have amazing quality?Recently the biggest trend in fast fashion is greenwashing- claiming sustainable practices and materials in their production with no measurable change or impact. H&M and ZARA are big culprits of this. It is harder to find truly sustainable brands now, but typically truly sustainable and made-to-last brands have a website section showing breakdowns of their processes and materials, with measurable results such as a sustainability index. I would say there really is just no such thing to be honest. What makes something sustainable is high quality, timeless/ basic styles so they aren’t trend driven and therefore can be worn for a long long time, and not producing massive massive qtys. Or upcycled product. Brands like COS, Jenni Kayne, everlane I guess… but honestly … second hand is the answer !!

So many of those “sustainable” brands just sell shapeless plain clothing too. Today’s clothing quality is bad because of fast fashion. They try and make clothes as cheaply and as quickly as possible so they cut corners with fabric quality and stitching quality. New styles are constantly being churned out as well. What has helped me is to focus more on buying clothes made of natural materials. I focus on wool, cotton, linen, cashmere, leather etc. Multiple brands sell things made of these materials and the quality tends to be better. I do have clothes that are synthetic blend like with polyester, rayon, nylon etc but I scrutinised them a lot to determine whether the material would hold up. Scrutinised by looking at the material, feeling it.
