Basically, I’m an MRI company. In order for me to cover my expenses and make a decent but not extravagant living, each scan needs to bring in $100. Blue Cross Blue Shield offers to add me to their network, which in my area is like 200,000 potential customers. However, they’ll only direct those customers to me if I give them a 90% discount. I still need to make $100 to keep my business afloat. I can’t be doing scans for $10 but I also can’t lose out on 200,000 potential customers. Not all ambulances are privatized/for profit. A lot of local fire departments are also in charge of local EMS. They charge hundreds of USD per hour but pays interpreters 17/hr max. So in many cases tax payer money are used to pay the company but our labour is exploited. Contractors in less developed countries are even paid only half the us minimum wage is what I heard from colleagues. Oh and did I mention no benefits? In Ontario, Canada, it is $240 CAD UNLESS you are a resident of Ontario with a valid Ontario Health Card, AND using the ambulance was deemed medically necessary. In which case it gets dropped to $45
