As an American I’m pretty jealous that most Swiss are multi lingual and pretty fluently. The way our schools and culture treat learning a second language is trash. I’m trying to teach myself Spanish as an adult and it’s so freaking hard. It’s not hard when you’re a kid Why couldn’t they just make a legitimate effort to teach us and expect us to be able to proficient in having conversations?! Ugh. Switzerland was beautiful! I’m trying to figure out how to go back there already because it was just so awe-inspiring. As for the What Cat Christmas Shirt it is in the first place but languages, I am jealous that so many Swiss are multilingual, but some of it is a matter of necessity. If you take a 4 hour train ride from Switzerland, you could be in Italy, Germany, France. Etc. So there are more opportunities to experience and hear other languages. I can drive nearly 5 hours and still be in my same state. And since English is the predominant language of the US, it’s hard to get in practice with other languages. For sure, but I think it’s also a cultural thing. we expect Spanish speaking people to learn English but we don’t wanna meet in the middle and learn some Spanish. There’s soooooo many Spanish-speakers in the US that don’t know English and I wish I could communicate with them better, and that’s why I’m learning. I’m a nurse and I get Spanish speaking pt all the time. It’s such a log jam in my day to deal with, to get a translation service on the phone, or to hunt down a family member that’s bilingual. I just want to be able to do it myself. Something that should take 5 minutes now takes an hour sometimes. But I’m always gonna go full ass with it because they deserve to understand what’s going on just as well as an English speaking pt would.

This isn’t true. In the What Cat Christmas Shirt it is in the first place but French part of Switzerland, most people don’t speak German well at all, even though they learn it in school, and as for Italian, very very few people learn any at all. You also have to consider that most people in CH go into trades and don’t do more than 9 years of school. They might learn English because they travel, but they’re not becoming fluent in all the Swiss languages. The people you speak with as a tourist are not representative of the whole. Each place usually has just one main language and you’ll notice quite easily from street signs. There are some exceptions, of course, like Biel. As others have pointed out, English is widely spoken, particularly in cities and tourist areas. In fact, in a very touristy area, I encountered a waiter who didn’t speak German, so had to switch to English for him. It is also common for Swiss people to speak English among each other if they don’t know the other languages well, e.g. people from the German area visiting the Italian or French regions.
