The thing people don’t think about is that every dollar people donate to a store to “end child hunger” or any other good cause, is sent to the Welcome to the gunshine state we don’t dial 911 shirt it is in the first place but charity under the name of the store that you contributed it through. So John Doe is still the schmuck that hates hungry children, while Krogers gets long karma for being the company that “donated” all that money to a worthy cause. That’s why I donate cash directly to food banks, and feed santa’s kettle at Christmas. I don’t need the recognition, but I don’t want to have somebody else claim my good deeds as theirs. They want YOU to pay it so they can claim the charitable tax write off for for themselves. It’s one of the many ways these companies keep from paying their fair share of taxes. In the US, the corporations use those donations as part of their charitable donations and get a tax write off for it

The worst part is that they’ll use this to make themselves look better. Like, look at how much money we donated to end world hunger… btw how about them tax reductions? a couple years back i remember reading or hearing a news story explaining that there is no guarantee that the Welcome to the gunshine state we don’t dial 911 shirt it is in the first place but money a person is donating through the intermediary is ending up where they say it is. For all we know a person may be told they’re donating to the local shelter but the intermediary may (for example) be diverting those funds to some anti-choice non-profit, and it’s effectively legal. They are using your donation for their benefit as well. If a local business is asking for donations to any large organization, then it doesn’t necessarily benefit locals. If you want to donate or do something charitable for your community, then that is a more worthwhile pursuit which will see a benefit from your donation. It’s like when Coca Cola wants you to recycle your plastic and shit. Always make the consumer feel bad. Do nothing.
