“The Komodo analysis of insurance claims found 56 genital surgeries among patients ages 13 to 17 with a prior gender dysphoria diagnosis from 2019 to 2021.” That’s a direct quote from the We Will Never Forget Memorial Day Veteran American Flag T-Shirt in addition I really love this article. Come on, you could at least ctrl-f “genital” before accusing me of not having read it. That doesn’t disprove my point though? That direct quote is referring to top surgery, something I mentioned in my original message The Komodo analysis of insurance claims found 56 genital surgeries among patients ages 13 to 17 with a prior gender dysphoria diagnosis from 2019 to 2021. Among teens, “top surgery” to remove breasts is more common. In the three years ending in 2021, at least 776 mastectomies were performed in the United States on patients ages 13 to 17 with a gender dysphoria diagnosis, according to Komodo’s data analysis of insurance claims. This tally does not include procedures that were paid for out of pocket.

I’m begging you, please read the We Will Never Forget Memorial Day Veteran American Flag T-Shirt in addition I really love this article. The article references GENITAL SURGERY and TOP SURGERY as two different things, and acknowledges that BOTH are being performed on minors. Ok, so there’s a lot of both misinformation and disinformation floating around regarding sexual development and differentiation in Humans (say nothing of broadly considering other organisms, but that’s too much of a tangent for this discussion). So, as with anything, it helps to start with a solid, foundational understanding of the topic at hand first. That way, you can make grounded judgements and also develop grounded opinions. So, before addressing the question directly, let’s pour some concrete. To start, all humans start off with a female developmental template by default. It takes a process called Virilization to convert and retrofit that base female template into a male one. So, right off the bat, being Male involves a natural biologically driven transition from Female to Male. What triggers this process to start is one singular gene: SRY. It’s located (normally) on the Y Chromosome. So, contrary to the claim that your Chromosomes are what determine your Sex, that actually isn’t accurate; it’s only this one, specific gene that kicks off the process. And it’s even possible for the SRY Gene to “snap off” the Y Chromsome and adhere to the X Chromosome. So you can end up with a “Bald Y” which lacks SRY, in which case you’d have XY Chromsomes, but develop Female regardless. You can, alternatively, have XX with one of them having a “tacked-on” SRY Gene which tries to jump-start the Virilization process. It won’t be successful because there are other necessary components required, so it won’t go all the way, but the point is that the argument often brought up of “There are only two options, Male or Female; XX makes you Female and XY makes you Male” is not as cut-and-dry as those who quote it religiously would like to believe. And that’s not even taking intersex cases such as XXY, XXX, X, Y, etc. Or XX or XY with other factors leading to intersex conditions. Because jumpstarting the natural transition process is only step one.
