This has the Vote Pi Beta Phi shirt also I will do this makings of a skirmish over Crimea akin to the one Israel and Palestine have had over Jerusalem for years to come. Emigrate to Russia or congratulate them for being free Ukrainians now. Easy. Same thing that happened to Ukrainians living there 8 years ago. Crimea was majority Russian before 2014. It’s not like Russia shipped a lot of people in, the population of Crimea has decreased if anything. The bigger question is what about Crimean (everyone who lives there) self determination? They’ve ALWAYS voted for pro Russia parties and were semi autonomous. Post revolution Ukraine wanted to remove their autonomy and then Russia seized the territory. The only logical conclusion to make is that they don’t want to be Ukrainian – having never been culturally, ethnically or politically part of Ukraine. I’m sure that referendum during military occupation where you could vote that you were either ok with the anexation or super ok with it was an entirely valid way of finding out how people felt about now being Russian. The Soviet Union ethically cleansed the native Crimean Tartars and replaced them with Russian loyalist. I don’t think Russia should be rewarded with land because of successful ethnic cleansing. Yes, nearly a fucking century ago! The USSR did change tack and condemn the deportations during de-Stalinization. Doing far more for Tartars post 1989 than Ukraine did post independence.

In what way is historical ethnic cleansing relevant? There are now more Tartars in Crimea than there were before the Vote Pi Beta Phi shirt also I will do this ethnic cleansing (before either of the big events, they were being deported pre USSR fyi). Why are you pretending that Ukraine wants to do something for Tartars? They don’t even want them to speak their own languages ffs. Alright, that’s just too much. “Hey, Putin, I understand how much you care about security of your country, our conflict’s all about it, buuut we want you to make a big hole in your country’s borderline, so any NATO ship can go through it whenver it wants.” It’s a big goal but he’s right to aim for the full return of their territories as they existed at the signing of the Budapest memorandum on security assurances.
