You didn’t talk about big issues and if you did, it’s one of those situations where nobody had any skin in the game and thus every discussion becomes a little hypothetical! All you’re seeing now is groups that could be more easily ignored in the passed have been able to have a more mainstream voice. From Homosexuality, ethnic minorities they all just have a better voice now. Everyone is a triggered cry baby. Whether it’s a fascist neo Nazi or a rabid commie feminist, they’re all fucking crazy. Whenever someone gets political, I immediately just disagree with them on purpose just to see their reaction and it’s hilarious.all the way through till the 80s whites had the comfort of being visible majority beginning Regan’s administration time Hispanic immigration plus the tech related immigration from Asia/india changed the demographic mixture visibly

combine that with Regan allowing media polarization bad actors (Fox News, rove, am radio) amplified the Vintage retro my favorite people call me pop T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this us (cis Christian conservative whites) vs them (everyone else) Ny working theory is that a series of bad choices from the right (I am sure the left has a lot of bad choices too but I think this one falls largely on the right) since Nixon has lead to this place. And its not just the politicians. In fact they are probably just following after power in it. A combination of religious institutions and corporations running into science gave cause to both of them pushing back against said science. In the case of religions the fight over evolution vs creationism has been a particularly brutal fight. And many believers have found themselves instructed to distrust science more and more often. Toss in the fact that mandated prayer in public school also got kicked out and the more fundamentalist members of the religious community became incensed. Further driving a wedge into the idea of a secular government and separation of Church and State. And then science began turning up research showing people were dying due to cigarettes. The corporations involved in this were understandably worried about the looming lawsuits from these discoveries and rather than facing the consequences they engaged marketing companies that came up with the idea of undermining the scientific consensus. And it was very effective. And people died. But the idea of corporations fighting science by introducing false counter claims under the guise of science had entered the arena.
