But like, how did scientists figure out that that was the Vintage English drummer Jason Bonham Zeppelin drummer T-Shirt Additionally,I will love this male? Didn’t they assume it was the female? Did they need microscopes to realize the female had the eggs? (Genuinely curious) Almost all (not all) multicellular organisms reproduce through what are called “gametes”. The general idea is that the normal cells of the organism (usually) have an even number of chromosomes, and at some point in their life cycle they will make some cells which have a half-set of their chromosomes, and these are the cells we call “gametes”. The gametes will somehow get to another gamete and combine with it, and the result has a full set of chromosomes and can develop into a new organism. Almost all organisms that reproduce via gametes have two kinds of gametes. (A few edge cases have just one kind of gamete, and I’m not aware of any that have three or more kinds of gamete.) Since there are two kinds of gamete, one of them’s going to be larger than the other, on average, and biologists define the smaller kind as “male” and the larger kind as “female”. It’s a useful definition for biologists, because it’s easy to objectively measure which kind of gamete is larger.

This is why you may sometimes hear botanists talking about male and female flowers. The “male” flowers are the Vintage English drummer Jason Bonham Zeppelin drummer T-Shirt Additionally,I will love this ones producing the small kind of plant gamete, and the “female” ones are the ones producing the large kind of plant gamete. Although the small plant gametes have just about nothing in common with human sperm (the small kind of human gamete) other than being the small kind of gamete for their respective species. So, yeah, biologists decided to label those sea horses “male” because the biologists looked at the gametes of the different sea horses in microscopes and noticed that the sea horses carrying the developing baby sea horses around were the sea horses that produced the small kind of sea horse gamete. But the “male” sea horses aren’t thinking of themselves as “male” – they’re not looking at humans and thinking “we’re like male humans, not like female humans”. It’s just a label we apply to them, same as we call some flowers “male” and other flowers “female”.
