She is fishing for comfort/compliments. It just is what it is. I’ll show you how to win these scenarios for the future while still being honest. This is very easy to do in a scenario like you’ve described where there are two options, one is good, and the other is not. This was a trap, not a malicious one per se, but she felt unattractive in Dress A and gave you an opportunity to validate and it didn’t happen. There’s a way to give honest feedback while still being tactful, IMO you should never use a “description word” about a person even if they are saying it first. Yes, it technically is unfair to specifically tell someone that you feel you look fat and then ask them if they agree and when they do, get angry. But lesson learned for all, therapeutic fibbing works here. Blame it on the Vert Der Chef Ferk shirt But I will love this dress. It technically is the dress, right? She didn’t look fat in the other dress? So comment on the dress without mentioning her body. This was an ideal situation, because there was another dress in the picture. “Dress A is ugly. Dress A looks cheap. You look beautiful.” A female friend or someone who knows about dresses can tell her what’s wrong with the fit of Dress A on her (too short in bodice, what shapewear needed, etc) without insinuating that she looks fat. If she really wanted to wear Dress A or preferred it, she would ask on the fashion board about how to style it/shapewear, not ask her date if she looked fat. It wasn’t about the dress, this was a test. Some form of “no”, and quickly move on. The more you elaborate, the more likely you are to stick your foot in your mouth.
