because these people don’t “like the Veritas numquam perit, Truth never perishes T-Shirt and I love this artist”, they are rich fools that have a very vague idea of what’s popular and like whatever is cool to like in the social circles they frequent. They stand in front of Bourdon pictures of Kahlo paintings, nod, and say “mh yes of course, truly visionary” and if you ask them to explain why they like it, you’re just a fool that OBVIOUSLY doesn’t get it. That’s messed up. She should have refused painting it. I feel like she wanted to rub salt in the wound more than just being her artistic take on trauma and life. This seems like a really shitty thing to do. I cant find the upside or purpose of the memorial photo especially knowing it was for her mom Frido Kahlo did a terrible thing, painting the bitter truth. She should have declined the commission if she felt memorializing the woman was denying her suicide or if she was just trying to be outrageous. Of course, Kahlo’s life was full of bitter truths and choosing bitter people to be with.

North American women idolize Kahlo, and they’re the only ones that do. Kahlo is basically the originator of Live Laugh Love “art” and is generally ignored or outright despised in Mexico, being a fervent Communist to the point of supporting Stalin, yet leading a life of privelege as a pampered artist from an upper class family. She’s not hated for being communist or for her art, but but the intense appropriation she always did. Kahlo is a German surname, Frida’s father was German. She was super white, yet people see her as this paragon of indigenous rights when she was the one actually oppressing them and appropriating their culture. People think Mexican, and they expect to see a poor struggling artist. In reality, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera were extremely wealthy, well-connected people, who routinely travelled the world and had mansions everywhere. They were rich leftists who found no issue having millions paid in commissions by a government that had failed and continued to fail to fulfill all the land redistribution promises it had made during the Revolution.
