Well pretend they’re birds-the male impregnates female, female makes eggs, but instead of the female taking care of eggs it’s male. The male is the male because he produces sperm. The female produces eggs. The female transfers the eggs to the male’s breeding pouch, where the male fertilizes them with his sperm, and then carries them until they hatch. Because biologically he is the male. The eggs are carried in a pocket, not technically inside his body. He doesn’t give birth to them, he fertilizes the eggs and incubates them then releases them from the pocket when they hatch. So, the male receives the unfertilized eggs (into his pouch) from the female upon passing her dance challenge that could take hours if need be. The male is awesome and completes the last month of gestation for the female and will provide protection for them after they are born until they are large enough to go off. There are some cool articles out about how the males actually develop a placenta to remove excess CO2 and provide O2, much like a mammalian pregnancy. This way the female can go replenish all the nutrients from egg development and the healthy and well fed male can finish up gestation to give the fry the best chance of survival.
