Befriending someone is fine so long as you’re not trying to be manipulative. If you’re interested in someone, don’t try to hide your interest and confirm yourself to what you think they want in a romantic partner. That’s what a lot of guys seem to do when they try to befriend someone as part of pursuing them romantically, and it’s creepy and dishonest. If they’re unavailable and you’re only friends with them because you’re romantically interested in them, that’s also creepy because then it’s less like you’re their friend and more like a stalker. Basically, if you’re trying to befriend someone with romantic motives, don’t hide those motives, don’t try to replace their SO, don’t try to change yourself to their ideal, and take no for an answer. If you express interest in someone you’ve started to befriend and they say no, then respect that no. If they don’t want to continue being friends with you because of your romantic interests, then respect them and back away. If you can’t separate your romantic interest in them with your friendship, then also back away.

There isn’t some magic trick beyond “don’t be creepy”. Also definitely don’t buy into that incel alpha male shit, because that’s total BS.
