The USSF is an integral part of the United States Department of the Air Force, working closely with the other Air Force branches to ensure the nation’s dominance in both air and space.

The concept of a dedicated space force has been debated for decades. In 2018, President Donald Trump directed the creation of the USSF to address the growing threats to American assets in space. The USSF was officially established on December 20, 2019, and is headquartered at Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado. Its first commander is General John W. “Jay” Raymond, who previously served as the commander of the Air Force Space Command.
