I only say “be careful!” If there’s a sharp object or water involved. HOWEVER, I rarely leave her alone with someone who is not me, her dad, my parents, or one of about three sitters. I fully vet every school we consider and if they don’t have a policy about solo kids being alone with one adult, she doesn’t go there. It’s a bit neurotic. But allllll the research shows that the real danger is almost all of the danger comes from someone a child knows.

I agree with you. I stress independence with my teen boys and they’ve been taking the Uc Davis Cow Shirt Also,I will get this city bus and walking since they were 11. This has built independence and confidence. I have friends that are horrified as we live in a big city but I refuse to coddle them – too many people do this. They are great kids and know how to get around the city on their own if needed, I want them to learn to rely on themselves. But then when there’s a stranger involved, it’s time to become ultra over protective. Talking about how they’d kill someone for messing with them. But yeah meanwhile, you won’t even make sure they have a healthy diet, are doing well in school, or behaving in public.
