They will probably either die out or become less horrible out of necessity, but in the meantime there is a real chance that they could deal irreparable damage to American democracy and to the trans community. They stem from the same concept, but transgender is a more inclusive and accurate term. Essentially, people saw the demonization of the word “transsexual” (something which, unfortunately, happens with practically every queer term) as an opportunity to replace it with a better alternative. And they have. Some still cling to transsexual as their term, but it’s often (though not always) due to transmedicalism, the idea that, in essence, a trans person must medically transition to count as trans. Some might consider this reasonable. I don’t- but we’ll ignore that for the moment to focus on why it inevitably causes issues regardless. There’s no one way to transition, even medically speaking, and everyone is going to have their own demands and their own specific plan for transition that all trans people “must” do (which, conveniently, will always include themselves if they consider themselves trans).

But really, transsexual has become a term that’s no longer useful.
