I assure you I can teach science in 7th through 12th (and probably a couple college freshman classes) BUT no way in hell could I teach a 7th grader HOW to READ. I almost added to this that I am qualified to teach history at the collegiate level, but certainly not biochemistry! Who knew that being a pharmacist made that person qualified to teach the intricacies of fascism to 16 year olds?!
What a sad way to look at education. I try to challenge them but I also think I know at this point what they are capable of and not capable of. I’m not that impressed by pharmacist’s knowledge of biochemistry in general. The ones I knew in college took the bare minimum of biochemistry. They probably learned it alright at the time, but they probably have not been working on it since. Biochemists know their biochemistry. A pharmacist would probably be good at the heath careers class or the pharmacy tech class though. I have a background in ecology, I’ve taken calculus, chemistry, statistics, anthropology, archaeology, geology blah blah blah. I cannot motivate my son to learn as well as his kinder teacher can. However, he was so bad at teaching, the nuns called him into the office for a parent-teacher conference and informed him he was not allowed to help with homework anymore when I was in 4th grade. There is a difference between knowing a subject and knowing HOW to teach said subject. This why college professors are so many college professors suck at teaching. Homeschool parents tutor rather than teach. Very different skillset. Even parents whose kids go to school often end up filling in gaps (for example, cvc blending, math facts, etc.) when curriculum dictates that these things not be covered due to some fad. It’s funny, I was homeschooled and I do homeschool curricula with my son (To keep his minority language skills native-level). Yet, I have never had a good interaction of a homeschooling sub. I work at a charter school where I am basically an instructional coach for homeschooling parents, with check-ins about every month or so and they send me work samples. I’d say most parents don’t realize is that there’s way more to what teachers learn than classroom management, and beyond the training we get and credential school I think a lot of it comes from experience. My first year of teaching I wasn’t that good of a teacher, but the longer I taugh one grade level the better I got at it. There’s no way to have one person be the best teacher to teach all of TK through 12. Despite that, there are some homeschooling families who are doing a great job, and some who are robbing their kids of an education. I’ve noticed it takes about 2 or 3 years for a parent to realize which one they are.

Kinesthetically, Auditoriy, Visually, other?A mixture of al?Some do best individually, some in group Everyone wants the kiddo to be best prepared for the next level of life and lifelong learning. You are quite combative in how you write to people – just because someone has pointed out that something you have reference has been debunked (multiple times, a quick Google of it would “educate” you) does not mean that they disagree with all pedagogical research – although it must be said that vast majority of research in education has been of poor quality, particularly in terms of sample size. It also does not make you better than someone because you studied under someone who wrote a book (like all professors do) or that you can name drop some concepts that you once read.
