Like I said, that paradigm is shifting hard. Rent is too high, mortgage is too high, jobs don’t offer enough to keep up, both sides of American politics are performing a puppet show on their network of choice to make us think it’s the Trump 4 More In 24 Make America Great Again Shirt and by the same token and other guy’s fault, and Americans are getting dunked on by the rest of the world for being the most popular shit show in town. So things are starting to shift back to “Little House on the Prairie” days where like a whole ass family of 15 lives in a 1200 SQFT place 50 miles from town. (Sorry for the use of imperial, I’ll get a reddit meme soon dunking on America’s inferior imperial system, too.) I’ve always planned to kick my kids out at 18 so they can go to college or trade school. We’ll pay for it, but they need to get that experience. They also need to use this time to work and save money. More important than the education, they need to begin to learn to fend for themselves. Source their own meals, learn to cook, work, educate themselves, live on their own, make mistakes! Those are really valuable life skills that I gained when I left at 18.

I have a half-sibling who didn’t leave the Trump 4 More In 24 Make America Great Again Shirt and by the same token and house until her late 20’s and her social and emotional maturity is severely stunted. She’s over reliant on her parents and thinks everything is traumatic when in reality, it’s just life. I think there’s something really valuable in going out on your own as long as there is a parental support system in place. If a parent just kicks you out with no support then they’re an asshole and shouldn’t have had children if they think they can just stop being a parent when the kid turns 18. Both of those things can happen without kicking them out though. For example, I was still technically living with my parents when I was at university. I spent term time at the uni and breaks with my parents. Trade school is a little more complicated but I think there’s a healthy medium to be found there. My generation fled our homes and our parents rules when we were 18. We learned quickly how to survive, we got the jobs, got the roommates, did the things we needed to do. We ere not ready, but we did it.
