The United States House of Representatives has impeached President Donald Trump on two counts: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The charges stem from Trump’s alleged efforts to pressure Ukraine to investigate his political rivals, and his subsequent obstruction of the House impeachment inquiry.

The impeachment process began in September 2019, when a whistleblower alleged that Trump had pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden. Trump initially denied the allegations, but later admitted that he had asked Zelensky to “look into” the Bidens.

The House Intelligence Committee subsequently launched an impeachment inquiry, which included hearings with witnesses and the release of documents. The committee’s report, released in December 2019, concluded that Trump had abused his power and obstructed Congress.

On December 18, 2019, the House voted to impeach Trump on both counts. The vote was largely along party lines, with Democrats supporting impeachment and Republicans opposing it. Trump became the third president in US history to be impeached.

The Senate trial of Trump began on January 16, 2020. The trial was presided over by Chief Justice John Roberts and lasted for two weeks. The House impeachment managers presented evidence and witnesses to support their case, while Trump’s defense team presented evidence and witnesses to refute the charges.
On February 5, 2020, the Senate voted to acquit Trump on both counts. The vote was again largely along party lines, with Republicans voting to acquit and Democrats voting to convict. Trump was acquitted by a vote of 52-48 on the abuse of power charge and by a vote of 53-47 on the obstruction of Congress charge.
Trump’s acquittal by the Senate was a significant victory for the president and his supporters. However, the impeachment process has also been divisive, with many Americans supporting impeachment and others opposing it. The impeachment inquiry and trial have also raised important questions about the president’s power and the role of Congress in holding the president accountable.
