All they need is a place to charge it, and a place to get free wifi. Both can be had at many restaurants, and for the True Story Fishing Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this price of a coffee. (as long as the owners aren’t jerks to them). You need a cell phone to exist at this point. It’s not a luxury. It’s like one of the last things a person could afford to give up. Any services they’re accessing / programs they’re in / care they’re receiving is all coordinated through the phone. I’d say it’s one of the last things a homeless person could afford to give up specifically, because it combines so many functions in one platform. I could probably easily find ways to do anything I needed without a phone. The only obvious use case I don’t know how to solve without it is resolving a breakdown in a remote area. This is because I have other resources available to me.

Depending on the True Story Fishing Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this area a lot of the times they will put emergency phones on the side of the road every couple miles in remote areas. It’s pretty simple. Plenty of people have cell phones before they go homeless. In what world, would you trade in your phone for food? A traded in phone is worth, what, $50? Maybe $100? A homeless person has no kitchen so let’s assume they buy one gas station sandwich a day and only drink water from public fountains. A gas station sandwich is like $4? So they can give up their phone for maybe a month’s worth of food. At which point, they now have no means of communication, searching, entertainment, emergency calls, etc. Phones – even without cell service – are valuable. WiFi is in plenty of public areas. It provides you with ways to find services for food, water, and shelter (and yes even jobs) . I wouldn’t give that away for even 6 months worth of food. I just wouldn’t know when I’ll have safety/security again. I’d be basically betting that – by the time the food runs out – I’ll have enough to acquire shelter and food.
