I think they are probably overestimating my need for flavours – what if I never want anything minty? – and underestimating my preferred alcohol content. If this were done through multiple cartridges, I could get behind it, but a single cartridge that fulfills all of my flavour and booze needs is just going to be a different type of wasteful. This thing doesn’t have “mint” flavor, it has raw compounds like ascorbic acid, anthocyanins, other flavonoids, etc Can’t help but think that DRM will unfortunately be part and parcel of this… like printers. You’re out of Cyan? There’s no printing a black and white document for you until you replace everything. This sounds too good to be true. Taste and smell are really hard to fool. You can get close, but it’s always off. Whisky is water, ethanol, and some other chemical compounds that give it flavor. This thing is supposed to contain all those chemical compounds and dispense them in precisely the right amounts to replicate wine, whisky, coffee, apple juice, etc. How on earth can it replicate stuff that is so specific? I think it would be more like “generic whisky flavor 2” type of thing.

You can create pretty good facsimiles apparently with a few dozen flavor chemicals. If that stuff can fool me into thinking it tastes like real whisky, then I will buy it in a second to have an unlimited supply of super premium spirits for a few dollars per glass. Most of this kind of stuff like cocktail pods and shit like that always seem made by people who don’t actually like drinking. I know this is different, but replicating the aroma of peated whisky or the texture of a good rye bourbon with a cartridge sounds like sci-fi to me. I think you are right about that, no way it will be able to get texture or subtle flavors. This is supposed to be the mp3 or compressed jpeg version of a cocktail, where only the most prominent flavors are there. I also think it will mostly shine with soda or hard seltzer, where you could come up with some pretty wild flavors not sold in stores. Do not let this pricing model become normal. They know how much a cartridge costs, just sell us the damn cartridge. This is going to be like juicero. This screams bullshit. Id bet $1000 this never hits shelves. Think about how this machine would be cleaned with its extremely complicated innards. I would be interested to know whether the pay per drink means they send replacement cartridges for free. Also when they say “spirits cartridge” I wonder if they make everything with neutral spirits and add “flavor molecules” to emulate other liquors
