If you’re in the Trimble Tech Class of 1981 Alumni High school dog shirt and I love this US, we don’t have regulations keeping corporations from raising prices at their whim. They’re technically not allowed to coordinate to all raise prices together. But as soon as news is published about “inflation” they know they can all jack up prices because it will be attributed to that. It’s not free if we don’t have choices. If I want to open a fair-price widget business, I’ll be smothered by the #1 and #2 widget manufacturers who are the only game in town. 6% is essentially an average. Some things are going down while others are going up. You probably happen to be spending most on the things going up rather than the things going down, so it probably feels like higher than 6% inflation.

/ A basket of goods that’s assumed to represent what ‘normal’ people would buy. Individual items going up 20-50% would raise the Trimble Tech Class of 1981 Alumni High school dog shirt and I love this CPI (and therefore “inflation went up by ___”) but it would take a drastic rise in the price of everything included in the CPI to see a big rise in inflation itself. Basically, look at each item as a weighted average, and the CPI as the overall average of those things. Second off, bold of you to assume those numbers are honest, or truly represent what people actually buy. If ground beef goes up by 60%, they could easily take ground beef off the CPI and switch to lentils or something. Since the assumption is the average person would also switch to that due to it being more affordable. While some would, in reality the average person just pays 60% more for ground beef. However, since ground beef is no longer part of the CPI and lentils are cheaper, and are now what the ‘average person’ would buy, oh hey! Look at that! Inflation is still 6%! Yay!
