Ok, so take my kid (4yo) for example. I don’t give him an “adult sized” portion by any means. He gets a child sized portion of whatever we’re having. He almost always doesn’t finish his plate, unless it’s something like pancakes. I’m not trying to starve him, and I don’t want him to be one of those people who only eats chicken nuggets when they’re in their 30’s. My wife and I also aren’t going to cook him a different meal every night either. I just want him to at least experience different foods and at least eat something at dinner, but it can be a struggle. I do not condone those nor think they’re appropriate. Second, parenting is a lot different in reality, with real kids, than hypothetical ones. Feeding kids, especially young kids, is HARD. Kids are often afraid/uncomfortable with novelty, which makes new foods and textures difficult. But then they’re also constantly changing, so the things that were safe food yesterday are intolerable the next day. Nutrition is important, but also, kids don’t live in a vacuum. I never wanted to give my son pop or excessively sugary drinks until he was older, but his grandpa took him to the movies and gave him a slurpee without my permission. They have friends, they have family, you can’t keep your kid in a bubble 24/7. I like pop, I’ve never given it to my child but he’s absolutely snuck some from my drink when I’ve got to the bathroom. You say in your edit “well don’t give kids treats that will give them a dopamine hit that they will crave”, but then you’ve got someone else telling you you’re abusing your kid for not letting them have the Halloween candy they trick or treated for.
