Every hotel has a different booking system (oftentimes through email) and especially if there are any specific things needed (family room) it takes quite a bit of time to book everything. So in the end the effort for a single tour is similar what you explained it to be in the olden times. I write a ton of itineraries every day for guests, call taxi companies or restaurants, email with hotels and flight companies. Also we have a 24/7 number that I carry with me anytime someone is on a tour that I booked, which is basically means I need to be available all summer and large parts of winter.

Majority of major hotels can be booked through a GDS. It’s not 100% but when I was an agent at least 90% of hotels would be through the GDS and confirmed basically instantly Yeah, I understand what you’re saying I just like the fact that if the shuttle doesn’t show it isn’t me my partner is bitching at, she is calling the travel agent! Joking aside, you can save a few bucks but sometimes travel agents have really great deals. I am going this year I paid 4200 after taxes flight and hotel for a week if I try to book it myself it would be 4400 before taxes just for the hotel stay.
