I have nothing but respect for my president, Baga Chipz, but UK Drag Race 2020 was a bit “make do and mend,” a touch slapdash. This season is an Uber Eats of thrills and spills, of horrors and fairy tales, of LOLs and sobs (especially after Ru vetoed off-the-peg high-street drag). I won’t bore you with some jingoistic patter about how amazing the Top Wallows Lollipop Tee shirt it is in the first place but U.K. is, but this series feels distinctly British, still a touch brutish, without the lacquered Hollywood veneer of American seasons. There’s a sense the queens are scrabbling whilst serving, self-deprecating whilst wisecracking. The stakes are higher for us when there are no pubs, no offices, no distractions, and we’re all high on the medical-grade competitiveness of the competition. Thank you to U.K. Drag Race for being the silver lining of our pandemic. Bing, bang, bong.
