Even if no one offered, you should ask. I got screamed at on 3 occasions by a person on a crutch because I “assumed” they needed the seat. It’s one thing to not judge something invisible but if it looks like a duck, quack like a duck, it’s probably safe to assume it’s a fucking duck. Now, I only made that “assumption” on the days I don’t mind getting a lecture. People sucks sometimes. A simple “no, thank you” would suffice. But it’s shit that I travel the tube 2-3 days a week and have never seen them advertised or explained! I’d be entirely ignorant of them without reading this thread.

Good job on telling us about them OP! I know now and I’ll certainly not wait to be asked if I see someone wearing one. The badges are great. I’ve offered my seat to an older person before and really offended them. It’s people in general, though, so I’m used to it; I just wanna spread some good vibes to kind strangers. I’ve experienced hostility towards disabled people fairly frequently in both the London and Edinburgh subreddits (the two city subreddits I’m most active in). I’m disabled, though I guess more middle-aged than young these days, and in particular threads about infrastructure and/or public transportation can be dismissive or even pretty brutal towards disabled people. There are often supportive comments too, but it’s not like the negative comments are downvoted into oblivion. Yes, from experience. The original post has since been deleted (it wasn’t mine), and the mods handled everything very well. It was regarding an autistic teenager on the Tube. I’m not going to repeat the comments that were made but it really shows the average user on this sub for who they really are. If anyone asked me kindly for a seat, I’d stand up no questions asked. Sometimes people are simply tired or not feeling well. I strongly believe that a lot of people take a look around before taking the last seat, just to make sure no one needs it more than they do More people need to use these badges or the baby on board ones if they need a seat. I’ve 100% not offered a seat to a pregnant lady a couple of times because I wasn’t sure if they were and I feel like it would be a very risky move to ask. I’m sure lots of people have done the same and aren’t sure whether or not to offer a seat and dont want to risk offending someone who turns out not to need a seat. I don’t think people are assholes when they don’t offer seats, I think it’s just this reasoning most of the time.
