My husband and I were told by our therapist that most couples that come to them are coming way too late. Like one partner is already checked out, or they’re just looking for “permission” to split. He was very enthusiastic that my husband and I were still in a good place, and we wanted to work it out. We were also lucky that he did one on one with my husband, and then couples counseling on alternating weeks. I had my own therapist so he had a safe space. This is true and often frustrating. Towards the end of our first session he asked if I would be willing to book a solo session without my husband there. When I went back for that one he told me straight up, “I dont say this very often, but I dont think your marriage is healthy and I dont think staying and trying to fix it will work” They will only come out and say it directly if it’s an abusive relationship. Therapy is more about you figuring out you want to break up on your own, but they’ll intervene if it’s an abusive situation. True. My Christian therapist said “if I give you a cd (on biblical divorce) to listen to, is there a place you can hide it and listen to it at home without your husband knowing?” I said “are you telling me to get a divorce?” He said “no. I’m not telling you to get a divorce, I’m telling you to listen to this talk on biblical divorce”. He wanted to plant the seed and then me come up with my own conclusion.
