I used to think it made sense to be more concerned with opposite gender friends in a Hetro relationship, but I don’t think that anymore. Same gender friends, even if not flirtatious, could encourage relationship destructive behavior. my husband and i have to restrictions on going out with friends. We are both grown men and know how to behave when in a relationship. I really appreciate this thread. My wife and I communicate candidly, but sometimes I’m not sure if she’d try and be the “cool wife” and pretend something doesn’t bother her. I had guy friends but I enjoyed women’s company for the types of conversations, the lack of hierarchy/ competition, and because I enjoy being soft and caring and it’s more well-received. The validation was less about attraction, you could flirt at a bar for that. It was more that I could make an impact on someone’s life, make them feel loved and that my caring was fuel for them. I grew up feeling like a burden and was abandoned by my mom, knowing women that I could trust and that cared about me really helped me heal. But I’m also a guy and those urges had to be subdued.
