Think of it this way. We live in a global economic system which consistently produces inequality and exploitation. On a global level, there are countries who benefit and countries who are massively exploited for cheap labour and natural resources, where people’s rights are not acknowledged or respected. Every chocolate bar or cup of coffee you consume is the result of this exploitation. This is why on the far-left to left, we talk about anti-capitalism, and the need for an alternative economic model. Centrists and those on the right deny this reality, and deny the fundamental change that the left sees as necessary. Instead, centrists try and manage the system to make it more palatable through reform, but even in a country as happy, prosperous and equal as Norway, the underlying systems of national and global exploitation persist. As a result, in my view, centrism is inadequate to deal with the scale of the challenges we face. There is no point in ‘compromising’ with many on the right, who are so-often blinded by nationalism, religion, prejudice, conspiracy, or greed. To do so is counter-productive, cowardly, and pleases no one.
