When Nadia Owusu was in her early teens, her father, a peripatetic, erudite Ghanaian who was idolized by his daughter, died. That event in and of itself would be enough to unsettle a young person just coming into her own. Owusu’s Aftershocks: A Memoir, out this week, swings between a period of depression that left the Today I Don’t Feel Like Doing Anything Except My Wife I’d Do Her T-Shirt in addition I really love this author all but emotionally immobilized and episodes from her youth and young adulthood. Being raised by her U.N. official father meant that she and her sister moved frequently as children (to England, Italy, Uganda, Ethiopia). Though Owusu describes a family made up of many far-flung aunts and uncles, hers was a lonely life as well; when Owusu applied for college, she declared herself an orphan in order to qualify for financial aid. In many episodes in the book, she acts as a surrogate mother to her younger sister and younger half brother.
