You have not successfully trained your parents to understand that you are an adult, and their approval is not required. And I think it’s pretty clear you don’t see it that way, either. So it doesn’t sound like you’ve entirely grown up, frankly. When you can let your parents problems with you be their problems and not yours, you’ll be there. As long as you think you need their approval, you haven’t really grown up entirely. Where did I insinuate the child was the problem? I feel I’ve grown up fairly well, and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with keeping a little bit of child in you, otherwise it can be hard to see any good in the world. Obviously I have some emotional issues that I’m working on as I believe I’ve stated at least once in this thread. Well that’s fair enough, you certainly didn’t. And I thoroughly agree with you on keeping some facets of a childlike view of life alive. In fact one of the things I remember from my childhood is looking at adults and thinking “they have completely forgotten.” So I totally agree with you there.

But emotional dependence on your parents’ approval is not one of those childlike virtues that’s worth keeping alive. It’s a survival instinct in children, but breaking free of that is part of the Thomas Jefferzyn Zyn shirt in contrast I will get this process of becoming an adult. Taking your place in the world as an adult partially means not letting your parents define your life for you. And I’m not just in your behavior, but in your internal psychology. Your anxiety about telling them about a child that you and your partner are both happy about, because you’re concerned about their possible unkind reaction, isn’t useful to you in any way. You can’t control or change how your parents respond, of course. But you can let it not destroy your peace of mind. Why does what they think matter to you? Whether it bothers you is up to you. Reading through the other comments on this thread, I think other people are pretty much saying what I’m saying. Except they’re just saying “grow up”. These difficult things we have in life are how we grow up. Take it from me, someone could not call myself an “adult” without stuttering until I was 40. So rather than just telling you to grow up, I’d like to point out that this is an opportunity for you to grow up some more. I’m 61, and I’m still working on it.
