Get it in writing and get them to commit to objective ve, measurable indicators as to what you growing into the This Is My Ugly Christmas Sweater Meowy Christmas Xmas Cats shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this role means. This is a sign to get your resume together imo and get out before they get rid of you. It’s an old trick keeps you productive while they find people they want to fill your role. if the situation were reversed, they wouldn’t pay you extra money for doing nothing while you decided if the font on their paychecks is a good fit for you. It was told to me I unfortunately can’t have a pay raise just yet and they want to see how I do in this role. They want to help me “grow into it”. There’s nothing wrong with you “growing into” that role while being fully paid for it. They could actually give you a mentor to help you succeed if they really meand the “help” part. It’s not like they can’t fire you within 1-2 weeks, months or seasons if you’re not living up to expectations. What’s going on is that can’t really see themselves accepting you into that position, and just need time to adjust (i.e. find someone else in your stead). PS: for reference, when at my old place of work we had someone in mind for a position he could’ve probably grown into but wasn’t qualified for just yet (CEO of a spin-off), we really went out of our way to talk a lot, help him into it, put him in place, and give him his old position back 4 weeks down the line when it was clear he wasn’t going to make it. if you wish to formally offer me a position and everything that goes with it I will consider it, If not then my position and duties are the same.

You will never be good enough..they will always dangle the This Is My Ugly Christmas Sweater Meowy Christmas Xmas Cats shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this carrot in front of your head and will never give you that pay raise. I’ve seen this happen too many times too. The trick is, when they do this, is to use your experience to find another job, and if they come back to you with a better offer, after finding a new job, don’t take it. Just leave. They will be complete assholes if you stay. If you want to give it a go, just get something in writing indicating a timeframe and specific goals they want you to meet to get a raise. Don’t leave it open ended. No more than 90 day window. It seems like you have a good opportunity ahead of you and you should take advantage of it. I would do my best to master the role and frequently chat with management about when the pay raise will come. If they string you along, worst case scenario is you make a lateral move to another company (which is really a promotion!)
