I had one graze my arm and it felt like someone took a rope and pulled it as fast as it could go. So to put simply, for me, an excruciating rope burn. Brain is bad with pain. Overloading a nerve is gonna yield super sharp or burning sensation because all the brain knows is it’s supposed to hurt like hell and so you get a full send horrifying stabbing or burning sensation…diabetic nerve pain can also feel like burning. In some hell hole town, I was in a war and only got shot 3 times, hit with shrapnel twice. It was a burning feeling but the worse was in the ER, that removal was the worse. Yep, got hit with essentially a shrapnel injury and the ER doc decided no anesthesia or local necessary because I was “in shock” and wouldn’t feel it. Felt it. Not shot but I had about a piece of shrapnel from an rpg go though my left rib cage when I was deployed to Afghanistan. At first I didn’t think I was hit just felt like I had the wind knocked out of me. After a few seconds I felt my left side was wet and looked down to see it was covered in blood. Ended up having a sucking chest wound and being flown out of there. Passed out on the helicopter and woke up a few days later in Germany. Spent about 3 weeks in the hospital recovering before going home. It didn’t hurt overall as much as you would think but the recovery the few months kind of sucked. It depends on the projectile. If is a smaller caliber like a NATO 223 round it doesn’t hurt at first, due mainly to adrenaline. It feels like a short hot pain. If the projectile hits bone it can travel several feet and come out of the body at a different location. After a minute or so as the adrenaline wares off there is throbbing pain all along the path the projectile took. It takes a few minutes to comprehend what just happened by that time hopefully some one is administering pain killers and you are rushed to the medic. I am told if the wound is fatal you really don’t feel anything, it’s lights out before the pain receptors kick in.
