Having kids doesn’t mean they’ll automatically take care of you when you’re old, a lot of people with large families end up alone in retirement homes. Who will take care of me? The same people who will take care of pretty much everyone else – nurses and caregivers, not kids. Not to mention the fact that that’s such a shitty reason to have a kid. While I certainly don’t think anyone should have kids just so they have someone to take care of them when they’re old, it’s definitely a benefit of having kids for most people. It’s not so much when you’re really old and have significant healthcare needs that it benefits you though. Most kids, even if they would love to take care of their aging parents themselves, simply aren’t equipped to do so past a certain point, and that’s when the parents end up in a nursing home. But there’s generally a period of time before that which can last for a lot of years where you can still live pretty independently but need someone’s help with things here and there. Maybe you’re not comfortable driving at night and need someone to take you places occasionally. Or you have some moderate mobility issues and need occasional help doing stuff around the house. And sure, you can hire someone to do those things for you, but you wind up burning through money pretty quickly doing that. And it can also be frustrating trying to find someone you trust to handle those things who’s not going to rip you off or try to scam you.

Again, having kids just so you have someone to take care of you when you’re old is a terrible reason to have kids, but having someone to help out as you age is usually a side benefit of having them. I chose to have kids because I wanted kids. I don’t think they have any obligation to help me out when I’m old, but if I do my job right I think they’ll want to. Afterwards my mom even expressed her surprise that I was there, right up till I explained to her that the only reason I came was to make sure the miserable bitch was dead.
