You can be a great, loving parent and be there for your kids but still be in a retirement home because your kid is not able to take care of you. One of my family members is in a nursing home right now. She is still loved, she still gets tons of visits, we are still there for her and she was there for us. But we cannot take care of her properly, so she’s in a home. This is a very american take. I prefer other cultures’ takes with multigenerational households. That’s assuming you’re rich enough for nurses/caretakers (40-100$/hr for RNs, and ~20-40$/hr for caretakers from agencies). You don’t know loneliness until you show up to the hospital because you can’t walk, are given the diagnosis of disseminated cancer, and don’t have anyone to call to talk to, much less pick you up. Then because you can’t walk, you’re shipped to a state funded (read: severely inadequately funded) nursing facility to sit in your shit and piss for months until you die. Don’t forget that when you’re shipped away, you’ll lose nearly everything you own because you don’t have anyone to help you move your items. Pets? Shelter after sitting alone for possibly days without food/water while we figure out it’s cancer and it’s probably incurable. Your friends will be as debilitated as you in old age and won’t be able to help.
