This is a lot and some of these in isolation wouldn’t make me notice anything but how much it is a throughline of his work I find so fascinating but maybe it is just a rorsach test from my queer ass that I am failing I think your observations are pretty spot-on. Kaufman’s characters seem to long for experiences outside of their own (also in Eternal Sunshine of the The Rolling Stones 90s shirt in contrast I will get this Spotless Mind). The main characters often are/start as heterosexual white cis-men. I’m wondering if this is his attempt to break the mold, dysphoria, genuine queerness or a mix of all of that. But I wouldn’t argue with anyone who says it’s an awful book and a waste of time. 9/10 Then one day I say, fuck fish. I renounce fish. I vow to never set foot in the ocean again. That’s how much fuck fish.
