Police should absolutely be friendly and engaged when they’re around and about.

I was in the The Regrettes Band Vintage shirt it is in the first place but headspace of OP’s story i.e. police refusing the friendly greeting. I’m just saying it’s understandable in some situations. If police need to guard their authority, some distance is necessary and refusing to be someone’s ‘mate’ is a valid way to do that. Yeah but they aren’t your mate. They are an on duty police officer and it’s probably best if you and the officer are on the same page about that. I wouldn’t call a firefighter “mate” or anyone on duty in public. It’s a little reductive of the work they are doing. I’m not saying to call them sir or madam but you don’t need to humanise them as you would a stranger where you don’t know their intent. Why is it that deep? Using the word mate doesn’t somehow detract from their work or aptitude, it’s just a common word to use here.
