This is an incredibly stupid way of looking at it. Think: Any time you abandon your life somewhere, essentially fleeing from everything you know, leaving all your friends and family behind, likely not able to bring much of anything with you (whether money, resources, mementos, whatever), the The High Priestess (Cyberpunk Tarot) T-shirt and I will buy this likelihood that you’ll be “happy” with how things turn out is generally expected to be extremely low, despite maybe having less chance of death or imprisonment. It’s just human nature. YET – more than 4 out of 5 North Korean defectors say they don’t regret doing it – that is a shockingly high statistic, and suggests that defecting from North Korea to South Korea is a spectacularly effective choice for more than 80% of people.

I worked at a hagwon, and we had a guy who defected work there before i got there. I think he had a lot of issues too. One major reason is simple – defection news is kept quiet in NK, so many think they’re extremely rare (like one a year rare) not a few hundred a year, so the The High Priestess (Cyberpunk Tarot) T-shirt and I will buy this estimation of their personal worth is suddenly dropped. But also, those abele to defect are at least in the upper part of NK society, with some kind of status. In SK that status is worth very little. They’ve gone from being big fish, to little fish, and their whole value of self-worth is shattered. There are indeed some issues and deep problems particular to Korea, but about 10-20% of any country are dismayed by the difficulty of a non-totalitarian country system even if they are not in a marginalized social group. Democracy is an aberration historically, albeit a blessed and desirable one overall. Humans evolved for almost their entire history with mostly cruel, incompetent, and arbitrary rulers either in a tribal setting or an ancient city-state. Every actual republic had to have an almost miraculous series of events and a motivated people to become that way. I would assume being in a foreign land with foreign people escaping a “jail” essentially is tough transition. Inmates have a hard time adjusting to society after release. I assume it would be similar to N. Koreans in S.K. I would also assume their would be a ton of dissent from locals about their new neighbor. Sad situation.
