Many of the Founding Fathers were considered felons by the British authorities. Benjamin Franklin, for example, was tried and convicted of seditious libel for his criticisms of the British government. Thomas Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence, was accused of treason for his role in the American Revolution. John Hancock, the first signer of the Declaration of Independence, was also considered a felon by the British.

These accusations and convictions stemmed from the Founding Fathers’ opposition to British rule and their desire for self-governance. In their eyes, they were fighting for what they believed was right, even if it meant breaking the law.
