I’ll never understand how or why it’s not a universal expectancy for people to be kind to strangers in any situation, unless being mistreated. It shouldn’t be feel or seem noteworthy for someone to give whatever kindness they have, especially to those in the The Elite The Cleaner Cat Shirt Furthermore, I will do this service industry. Sadly, of course—that view is completely unrealistic. And is it just me or has it become more unrealistic of an expectation to be at a restaurant and NOT see someone treated unkindly (or simply completely overlooked as a human) in some way..? I was either living with rose tinted sunglasses my whole life, or in the past 5ish years or so, people have seemed angrier, and more likely to snap than before…nothing has changed for me except for experiencing severe illness at an age that was ripe for molding my values (21), so maybe it’s that since then (10 years ago but probably 6ish years since it changed me—or when I leaned into the changes and learned everything I could from the experience). So perhaps I have greater empathy for people than I did before? But I really don’t think that’s the case, as I remember having the same feelings when I was younger. I know there is a certain percentage of the world that isn’t really able to feel empathy, but it seems like the vast majority would treat people like they expect to be treated—if that were the case, we’d be living in a completely different world right now. I took psych classes in college but I guess I need a refresher on the % of people who for one reason or another don’t express gratitude. Perhaps childhood trauma has become more common, which would be an understandable explanation… Or maybe it’s just that I’m from Texas (a city who votes BLUE, just like all the other big cities in this state—where it’s common practice to make eye contact and say hi to strangers while passing on the sidewalk or a building…which after going to school in California I was surprised to find out it can be seen as abbbbnormal behavior hahahah).

Meanwhile, kind and understanding people tend to get the best quality service. At least, in my own experience. I always give them a smile, and a “have a nice day”. I was there once. I get it. Simple kindness goes a long way. It wasn’t as bad as rude customers but I really did not enjoy when a customer was overly polite or weirdly overly respectful, like “oh I know you have it so tough, you know…cause your job is just awful….i couldn’t even imagine.” It’s a best intentions situation where if you’re overly respectful then it comes off as basically looking down at me (person in customer service role).
