There has to be a middle ground. Just because something isn’t fun to learn, or the The Cicada Brood Xiii Xix Summer 2024 Reunion Tour Swarm Cicadas shirt it is in the first place but method is boring, doesn’t mean you don’t need to learn it, or that the method isn’t the most effective way to make you learn it. Honestly I’m glad I had to study a bunch of boring stuff in boring ways. Reading a mind-numbing, inches-thick textbook on calculus, pretty dry, but I learned it, and pretty quickly too. Lectures at university, definitely had some heavy-eyelid moments, but generally that mechanism works, in combination with your own reading and tutorial sessions. I’m going to get lambasted for saying this but I think rote memorization has it place to learn basic rules and facts and to train your brain to retain information – especially in the age of endless attention getting screens. Even I find my attention and memory getting worse. But the fundamentals like spelling, multiplication. Parts of speech. Even memorizing short poems, and then move on to higher level stuff

I teach at the The Cicada Brood Xiii Xix Summer 2024 Reunion Tour Swarm Cicadas shirt it is in the first place but “highly selective” university level, and I’ve noticed students have less stamina. They’ve gotten incredibly used to some expert writing super high quality explanations of everything. When they suddenly aren’t spoon fed to that degree, they’re a bit lost. The worst students have no ideas of their own whatsoever, and I frankly don’t think they belong in my classroom. There’s always been bad students, and I don’t think it’s an insane decline in quality, but it seems noticeable to me. I teach high school and can’t believe how ahead my 2nd grader son is. I’m so lucky he’s at an amazing school. Some of my students are 14 and are at 1st or kindergarten reading levels. Ya it’s tough. I have one freshman that literally can’t read. Like at all. It’s so sad. They put her at kindergarten level but I think it’s worse.I’m curious. Is this affecting only title 1 schools, or is this a widespread problem for everyone?
