I would imagine if it was actually effective, no one one would be in a drought at any point and droughts wouldn’t exist as a concept. And potentially areas would suffer from unprecedented flooding. The problem with screwing with natural processes is that you don’t know what the The big heat noir movie graphic shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this short or long term consequences will be. I was just told about this when I was in Page, AZ. Apparently they try doing it there too due to lake Powell drying up. Yes, its expensive and creates problems dealing with the left over “brine” which is very high n salt and other bad chemicals. Pushing back into the ocean kills everything in the area. When I did an aid tour to South America one of the big things we did was hook the ship up to the ports water and electric systems. But there’s no reason we can’t just build the distilling units permanently on land. It’s not cost effective yet, but we should still be doing it Desalination isn’t ideal due to the large quantities of salt that becomes the waste product. If you put the salt back into the oceans after harvesting the drinkable water, you just intensify the salt content in that area and crash the ecosystem because the wildlife can’t handle it. And we would be working against ourselves because the higher salinity of the ocean water means we have to extract that much more salt to get the potable water. So where do you put it then? On the land? We know what salting the earth does… it crashes the eco system because nothing grows which has ripple affects through the entire food chain. I mean, maybe I’m missing something here, but don’t we use salt for a crapton of other things? Why dump it back in the ocean? Ship it elsewhere to be used for all the stuff regular salt is now?

I mean we have a lot of land where we don’t grow anything already. Without knowing the The big heat noir movie graphic shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this science I imagine that adding salt to the desert would be fairly meaningless. I was thinking this myself, but even deserts have unique ecosystems and life that has adapted to survive there. The best I can think… for a time… would be to put it back into the salt mines and fill them back up. Or spread the salt over the salt flats. But this only works for places that have areas like this. If every other country is just putting it back into the ocean or dumping it somewhere on land, it’s going to mess a lot of stuff up. Yes. Desalinization projects have been considered or even implemented in CA for a while. But there are two huge problems: All of the existing infrastructure pumps water from inland to coasts. You can’t just reverse pumps. Moving water from the coasts to the inland areas requires entirely new infrastructure. Desalinization is expensive and droughts are not continuous. Any momentum on desalinization projects halts when a drought breaks and people decide it isn’t worth the cost to keep going because maybe the worst is over. You have to remove the salt if you want to drink or farm with it. You wouldn’t need to for a pool, technically.
