The creation of ‘zed’ would be the The Big Bad Bruiser Wolf shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this real question. No other letters have an added consonant, just different added vowel sounds to be able to pronounce it. When the Roman empire conquered Greece, Greek was brefily, at the time, written with the Latin alphabet. Two sounds existed in Greek that did not have latin letter equivlanets. These were upsilon υ and Zeta ζ. These letters got added into the alphabet at the end, as y and z. Zed comes from Zeta, hence the name of the d. Upsilon (literally simple u in Greek) was undergoing sound shift becoming more like an I sound, and hence was called “Greek i”, the name that is retained in languages deriving from Latin (Spanish, French, Italian, etc.) However, beta did not become bed, theta did not become thed, and eta did not become ed. So the variation stands, even if those changed sooner than ‘zee’.

The Latin alphabet comes from the The Big Bad Bruiser Wolf shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this Etruscan alphabet, not the Greek one, hence it doesn’t retain Greek names. Zed is the only consonant that directly entered the Latin alphabet from Greek. The change from Beta to Bee occured in Etruscan, not in Latin, and was already finished by the time Zed was added. Zee becoming Zee happens in a single dialect of English over a thousand years later. Except every letter has a vowel sound in its name. The “d” is a completely unnecessary addition. The whole point is simplicity and you “zedders” keep adding unnecessary adornments. I despise the US education system for drilling stuff like this into my brain, stuff that’s different from the rest of the world for the sake of being different. If I were to start saying “zed” with my regular american accent people would just stare at me like I grew a second head. Plus I’m just not used to it.
