For context, I mostly meditate in a religious sense, but will sometimes do it for mental health (UDD, specifically). People recommend meditation for a lot of my ailments, and I’m sure it would help, but meditation is extremely intense for me. I’m talking quick visions of fully formed scenes, people, etc. These are so quick that I cannot even keep my eyes closed for long. Every time I meditate I end up having a headache after because of how intense it is. I’ve never heard anyone else talk about this and everyone I bring it up to is just confused. I guess this is a ‘is this normal’ question. I’m assuming if you have a diagnosis, you’ve also worked with a therapist? Dissociation can be a safety mechanism for your brain to protect you from certain thoughts/memories. If you have a traumatic past, meditation without support may not be wise, and indeed be too overwhelming for you. Learn to ground, meditate on your root chakra/perineum, focus your attention on something that doesn’t have to do with visualization/imagination, like sounds, sensations, odors, music, etc. There’s some really cool eyes-open meditations you can do. Some are on artwork, others on a candle flame, others on your entire visual field. I’d check those out if closing your eyes isn’t really a comfortable experience! I did the whole “I can’t accept this sir.” Totally lying. I can accept this. He insists and I go on my way. Kinda creepy experience, but I made $60 on a 2.5 mile trip.
