They let the CBP investigate themselves (Inspector General refused to investigate), it took over 9 months, no report of findings was issued and all that resulted was a disciplinary write up the offending agents for “administrative violations”.

It would be a lot easier to support the Tatsuro Taira Vs Edgar Chairez shirt and I love this admin, especially with the obstruction from Republicans, if they atleast did the bare minimum in their power I’m not saying your necessarily wrong, but it’s an oversimplification. Historically i.e. pre-Trump, the justice department has operated independent of the executive. This is actually wise and honestly should be better fire-walled against executive influence. Now, speaking from experience (albeit not at this level) there are significant hurdles to holding contractors and agents liable, criminally or otherwise. There is a very delicate balance in finding a contractor who will meet the budget and acquiesce to the oversight. If the liability outweighs the profit then you’ll not receive a bid, so there are protections built into the contracts for these contractors including provisions for the political. If a historically independent agency opens an investigation (which it would take) at the behest of the executive then there’s a strong possibility it could appear political (as far from the truth as that might be). This opens the government to liability. The fallout of which can be other contractors rethinking their own agreements and terms including costs. This sounds callous but the gov does run on money. Add in that if an investigation is launched there’s a cost to that and litigation costs are part of the budget for any agency. You can only fight so many battles. Although, a cost effective strategy would be to target individuals and not the contractor but the gov may still have a fight because those contractors have to worry about recruitment. If they don’t protect employees they may not have enough, not to mention unions and associations. This problem grows exponentially when their is maybe 1-2 contractors who can meet the terms of the procurement. It becomes a case of the gov needing them more than they need the gov. If so many voters hadn’t swallowed the “run the country like a business” nonsense we could take back some of these services into the public sector where oversight and accountability could be increased but here we are doing this delicate dance with corporations while kids die.
