Reid was criticized nearly constantly by the Tampa Bay Lightning Hockey Shirt But I will love this progressive left for refusing to take action on the filibuster. He maintained the party line about tradition, and needing it to remain in place for when the Dems were back in the minority. It did come up, both Obama and Reid were BEGGED by various factions of the party to eliminate the filibuster for SCOTUS nominees, but both vehemently refused citing “bi-partisanship” and “political norms”. RBG specifically didn’t retire for this very reason. This whole fiasco is 100% on Reid and Obama, not RBG. It’s fucking cringe that all the top comments don’t even understand basic US civics and ignore the fact if she would have retired under Obama, McConnell would have just held her seat hostage. Reid amending the senate rules to avoid the filibuster and GOP obstruction was a big deal. There’s tons of articles from that era where he explicitly says the rules will only be changed to start getting circuit and appeals court judges approved, but removing the filibuster for SCOTUS is completely off the table. Same for Obama. This thread is a perfect example why the US is going to such shit. Thousands of Dunning-Krugers running around blaming people for things they don’t even understand.

Hell, Harry Reid still to this day thinks he did the Tampa Bay Lightning Hockey Shirt But I will love this right thing and with hind-sight wouldn’t have use the nuclear option on SCOTUS appointees. Let that sink in. Here is an interview he did in 2020 with NPR: CORNISH: You’ve said that you do not regret changing the rules to eliminate the need for 60 votes to end debate over judicial nominations. But since it’s paved the way for how Mitch McConnell and the Republican majority are basically steamrolling Democrats in the Senate now, what’s your response to Democrats who say you should? REID: Well, let’s look at what happened. Obama was president. He’d been elected by a large majority, but Republicans were filibustering everything. He couldn’t get his cabinet officers confirmed, subcabinet. We had the D.C. Circuit, the second most important court in the country – had many vacancies. What were we to do? So that’s the reason that I moved to change the rules. REID: No, I think I went far enough. As a result of changing the rules, we were able to do things that made Obama’s presidency one that history books will look back on and say, gee, he got a lot done. So it was something we needed for the country, and it was the right thing to do.
