Hockenson’s exceptional college performance made him one of the most coveted tight end prospects in the 2019 NFL Draft. The Detroit Lions selected him with the eighth overall pick, making him the highest-drafted tight end in franchise history. The Lions were immediately impressed with Hockenson’s size, speed, and athleticism, which they believed would be a valuable asset to their offense.

In his rookie season, Hockenson quickly established himself as one of the NFL’s top young tight ends. He caught 32 passes for 367 yards and six touchdowns, ranking among the league leaders in touchdowns and yards per reception for tight ends. His impressive debut earned him a Pro Bowl selection, becoming the first Lions tight end to make the Pro Bowl since 1989.

For the next three seasons, Hockenson continued to shine in Detroit. In 2020, he set career highs in receiving yards (676) and receptions (60), while also scoring six touchdowns. In 2021, he once again made the Pro Bowl, this time as a starter, after recording 61 catches for 583 yards and four touchdowns. Hockenson’s ability to create mismatches with his size and athleticism made him a nightmare for opposing defenses.
In March 2023, the Lions traded Hockenson to the Minnesota Vikings for a second-round draft pick. The Vikings were in need of a dynamic tight end to complement their offense, and Hockenson fit the bill perfectly. The trade was a bittersweet moment for Hockenson, who had established himself as a fan favorite in Detroit.
In Minnesota, Hockenson has continued to impress. He has become a key target for quarterback Kirk Cousins, forming a formidable connection with Justin Jefferson and K.J. Osborn. Hockenson’s ability to stretch the field with his deep-threat capabilities and create space for his teammates has been a welcomed addition to the Vikings’ offense.
