Because Christians like this are more than just hypocritical fakers. They may have read the Surfs Up For The Buffalo Bills shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this Bible, but they sure as hell didn’t understand it. And if you try to discuss scripture with them, no matter how you frame the discussion, YOU are the one being blasphemous. Because apparently the Bible and the words therein are so holy and sacred and wonderful that trying to understand them through discussion, questioning, debate, or any other kind of analytical reasoning is, in itself, a sin against God. In this way they can use very specific verses to justify their own hatred and biases while simultaneously ignoring the context or other verses that directly contradict their interpretation. If you counter their Bible quote of “For a man to lay with another man is an abomination,” with “Love thy neighbor,” they’ll screech and wail and say YOU are the one twisting the words of God for YOUR benefit. Or you could counter with the context that the word “abomination” simply meant “abnormality” at the time and did not have a negative connotation until several centuries later. Either way they’ll throw a hissy fit and go through all these mental gymnastics to fool themselves into thinking THEY are in the right and everyone who disagrees is literally on the side of Satan.
